Chungbuk Wellness Tourism Cluster
Wellness tour is a new high value-added tourism industry that promotes health and the enhancement of quality of life through tourism.
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) selected the “Top 25 Wellness Travel Destinations” in 2017 to promote “wellness tourism.” It provided support for overseas promotion and enhancing the travel experience of tourists. In 2018 and 2019, 8 destinations were newly discovered each year, expanding the list to the “Top 41 Wellness Travel Destinations”. As a result, foreign tourists who visited any of the “Top 33 Wellness Travel Destinations” in 2018 was 127,000 people, with an increase of 16.6% compared to 2017. MCST plans to continuously discover new content for “Wellness Travel”, with hopes of further expanding wellness tour attractions.
In this situation, MCST selected Gyeongsangnam-do in 2018 and Chungcheongnam-do in 2019 as the base for wellness tourism.
The wellness tourism cluster project was planned with the objective to take Korea’s wellness tourism to the next level by establishing a hub for experiencing peaceful vacations in a healing facility with a budget of KRW 800 million including KRW 400 million provided by the government, setting mid to long-term development strategies, developing programs, promoting, and cultivating experts for wellness tourism. Therefore Gyeongsangnam-do was selected in 2018 and Chungcheongbuk-do in 2019 as the hub for wellness tourism.
Chungbuk Wellness Tourism Cluster strives for the development of various industries in cooperation with Chungcheongbuk-do, Chungju-si, Jecheon-si, Chungbuk Innovation Institute of Science & Technology, Godowon Healing Center, and Jecheon Korean Medicine Bio Promtion Foundation.
